During the 21st century, we’ve had 3 global economic crises: 1) dot-com bubble during 2000-2002, 2) financial crises of 2007-2009 and 3) recent covid-19 recession. What are the differences and similarities of these crises and whether we can even count the recent covid-19 slump as a crisis in an economic sense? What can we learn from the recessions of the past 20 years and is there a way to hack the economic crisis (soften the effects e.g. through gov. lending/spending and is it a wise strategy)? These are the questions that the panel will discuss.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit us all hard. The unknown, uncertainty, social distancing, fake news, rapidly raising number of C-19 cases and free fall on stock markets.

Three different organizations share their experiences in managing the crisis and adapting to the new world since then. Crisis creates new possibilities and innovation, it makes one drop the unnecessary and become more resourceful.
The city of Tartu was the most active local authority in Estonia during the crisis, being proactive, making quick and bold decisions in terms of communication and governance. Swedbank as an important part of the economic bloodstream in Estonia, had to respond to the needs of its corporate and private customers. At the same time the work of 2600+ employees had to be reorganized within days. Veriff, a global online identity verification company, enabled notarial acts to be carried out remotely. Before the pandemic, this was one of the last cases in Estonia (besides marriage), where you were legally obliged to be physically present.

    ‎‎
We will hear about the lessons learned, examples of cooperation and what possibilities could the future hold if we all take note of the experiences that have been handed to us in this crisis.

Planning a digital product initially seems similar to designing a house. When you start actually designing, developing and presenting it to the clients you'll find out that it is more like a court case where many details are potentially unknown or not thought of in the beginning. Also, things might get emotional during the process, just like in the courtroom.

We will give you a quick and helpful overview about potential cooperation partners, project types, how to plan software and accept the product built by an external party. After 45 minutes you will have a good understanding of things you have to keep in mind and what to investigate deeper as a homework before actually starting the process.

During this seminar, we look at how disabled people are able to use modern technologies, what assistive solutions are available and how you as a developer or product owner can make your services accessible to all.

When assessing a firm's value investors usually make thorough analysis of past financial performance and intangible assets. However, this information does not reveal asymmetries of information existing in the markets. The real value of any business lies in the hearts and minds of its people. It seems that everyone acknowledges the importance of leadership in the due diligence process, but it is very hard to disclose and measure it in objective, not intuitive terms.

The growth of global trade has created a bottleneck in the calculation of VAT and customs declarations in almost all European countries. One of Estonia's most ambitious startups - Eurora - is helping to solve the problem by using artificial intelligence when classifying goods and automatically determining the taxes associated with those goods. In cooperation with STACC and TalTech, a global VAT and customs declaration service platform is being developed, which will enable countries to significantly increase their tax revenues. At the seminar, STACC and Eurora experts will talk about the creation of this unique solution and the lessons learned from it.

‎As we all know, myths are spreading in our field. They mislead people. And when someone is confused, they does not act or decide anything. In our panel, we discuss myths about sustainability. Myths about payback time. Myths that embedded in the past, but is no longer valid.

    For example:

There is no point in producing solar electricity in Estonia.
Electric wind turbines are very expensive and do not pay off.
There is no point in buying a used electric car.
There is no point in collecting clothes with separate waste.
Waste is not dealt with, they are set on fire.
    Hydrogen cars explode.

    ... and other interesting myths.

Lindström, an environmentally friendly textile rental service company, has made all its rental workwear SMART by adding a chip to each item. I know what you’re thinking, and no – the chip is not intended to monitor employees, but to keep track of the location of each workwear item, frequency of use and maintenance, so that our customers can analyze this information and use this to their benefit.
    ‎‎
More data = better decisions. But in addition to efficiency, there is another obvious winner in this formula: the environment. Smart workwear brings us closer to the idealistic world of on-demand manufacturing, fine-tuned processes to support the longest possible lifespan of each item, and effective recycling instead of incineration.

How to give your target audience a feeling that you care about their needs and experiences? It's simple. Define the potential users that you can expect to purchase your products or services. In web-design, good website usability is about making it easy for users to find the information they need quickly and easily – intuitively. UX (user experience) combined with UI (user interface) means generating elegant visuals that promote a user-friendly approach.

Do tiny elements like color and shape of a button, the choice of font, space between different elements, seem irrelevant? They are not. Instead each aspect, every transition and micro interaction designed properly and applied wisely can have a huge impact on the success of the product and its ability to fulfill the business goals.

Yes, through your brand customers can identify your product/service but through a good experience, they want to come back and use it again.

Now – entrepreneurs are moving to the final frontier by building CubeSats or developing next-generation launcher modules. The new mindset that space is best colonized by smaller, cheaper and faster computers favours entrepreneurial engineering teams. Now it is time for your contribution.

Limitation for accelerating the collaborative research has long existed before the COVID-19 Pandemic. Within the Pandemic crisis, the challenge was raised and the interest was shown by multiple industries, seeing the biomedical and healthcare topics as a cornerstone for "getting back to normal". Laying in the challenges within siloed, unharmonized biomedical datasets and legal aspects, also including challenges of patients and population engagement into the research initiatives, during the presentation, based on the case studies of multiple companies (including Longenesis), we will talk on how technologies can be used as a modern "screwdriver", for identifying and unlocking the hidden value of biomedical data to accelerate the novel drug and treatment discovery and provide better help to those of need.

The most active students can even spend more than 20 hours a week working towards the goals of the organisation besides studying and working. The secret to such commitment is in how the organisation culture is managed.

Student Foundation (Üliõpilaskonna Sihtasutus) develops all the student organisatsions in Tartu and leads the well-known student activity brand BE MORE (OLE ROHKEM). We achieve this with 40 highly motivated volunteers who truly believe in our goals.

Why do people want to come to work and live in Estonia in the first place? And if you have a team member who is new to the country, what can you do to support this person? At its height, a total of 400,000 women and men were involved in the Apollo program working for numerous contractors. Today, new generations of space enthusiasts working in aerospace companies (including start-ups) are rapidly entering the field of commercial space transportation.

The space economy is much more than launching satellites into orbit. It extends to the development of space-related products and services, including R&D, manufacturing and use of space infrastructure, but also space-enabled applications and knowledge that can be transferred to terrestrial applications. This makes the space economy interconnected with most of the high-tech sectors of today. The European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centres are the place for entrepreneurs to improve life on Earth through the commercialization of innovative space-enabled products and services in promising areas of the economy.

Kylas is a B2C web platform that was created and launched quickly by the Development Center of Võru County. Kylas offers Southern-Estonian experiences from locals to tourists and gives the visitor a chance to really enjoy local experience. Research into global tourism trends shows that people look for authentic new experiences. Increasingly, people make decisions based on emotions and they expect that the desired product, service or activity is found easily, with little time spent on it. Idea of creating an additional landing page to visitvoru.ee webpage to showcase local services quickly escalated when various partners saw KYLAS as potentially boosting the local tourism sector. One of the key partners was European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 who was looking for a partner to build a similar environment for the tourists. Hence until 2024 all the provided services will be from South-Estonia and the expansion to the rest of Estonia and Baltics will happen after that.

KYLAS webpage differs from similar platforms that are already in the market by having a service provider content management system and customer support in native language (estonian) and also by providing all the service providers with free training via KYLAS academy, that will be fully digitalised. By creating these extra opportunities we increase entrepreneurship of the different social groups that didn't have that opportunity before.

By the year 2024, we aim to create at least 400 new like-a-local services. South Estonia will be internationally known for its beautiful nature and interesting people that can provide services that fit clients needs.

Deep tech startups of today will have effects on the next decade. Imagine our world without Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) or blue LEDs – both won Nobel Physics awards. The reality is that these inventions that change our world are often behind the spotlight. However, without these inventions we would not have any of the devices on which all the tech startup ecosystem is built on.
